Competition.
I was awarded first place for this project at the University of Idaho College of Graduate Studies Innovation Showcase competition 2016.
A look into avant-garde fashion and design and how its innovative techniques and styles are important to the evolution of everyday fashion. Avant-garde fashion is experimental and often times executed with unconventional materials and constructed in innovative ways. Avant-garde designers take risks with their exaggerated designs that evolve from runway to everyday designs.
I was inspired by a look I saw on Project Runway, and decided to challenge myself to try and recreate an outfit with similar materials, but with my own unique approach. I designed and constructed a bodice and skirt made from deconstructed sombrero hats, hand sewn to a draped boned bodice and 6-gore skirt pattern that I made. The bodice has snap closures on the center back, and the skirt has a zipper closure on the center back.

This shoot was inspired by the EMP Museum in Seattle, WA. It is a free form and organic structure, designed by architect Frank Gehry. I interpret the figures of the building as organs or body parts pushing through skin, turning something identifiable into an unidentifiable mass of an object.

The contrasting light and dark colors on a tennis court is what inspired me to style with monochrome white and black outfits. The crisp lines on the tennis court are reflected through the angles in the model's poses.

Inspired by the abstract, damaged photography work of Wolfgang Tillmans to convey it's fluidity and vibrance, while translating that into the movement of hair. The model's hair color was photoshopped to be cohesive with Tillmans' photographs. I combined a photograph of the model with one of Tillmans' pieces in the background.

I designed this dress with the vibrancy of candy in mind. I guess you could say visions of sugar-plums danced in my head that night...

Our goal was to design and construct a jacket for the Denim & Supply brand segment of Ralph Lauren, while analyzing the brand and focusing on a specific consumer. We were given a piece of rabbit fur that was required to be incorporated into the jacket.
CONSUMER: A 20-25 year old male student studying biology, located in Cologne, Germany, and is financially supported by his parents. He has a creative lifestyle and enjoys expressing himself through art and music when he is not concentrating on his studies. He also enjoys a cold beer with his friends in his free time. He wears stylish, yet functional clothing that is high quality and will last for multiple seasons.
CONCEPT: Since the consumer is a biology student, we went with an "under the microscope" approach, and focused on closeups of images that show symmetry.
